90-degree Air Vent for Laser Exhaust

Description

Many devices, such as laser cutters and engravers, should vent fumes outdoors. This allows for venting outdoors with minimal return airflow and can be used for other purposes. The vent routes air flow from an 85 mm diameter flex hose, typical of XTool hoses and common with other laser engraver/cutters. It routes the air 90 degrees to a rectangular opening. In addition, there are 3 optional attachments.

1) A snap-on grid to prevent bugs and mice from going into the vent

2) A snap-on frame to fit a sliding glass door (#1 is not needed if you use this frame)

3) A screwed-on bracket to raise the vent height to match the door sill and better secure the vent hose.

These attachments are unlikely to work for every situation, so you may need to adapt them to your specific needs. We used PETG for these parts. PLA is likely to deform under higher heat or sunlight and should be avoided.

For vent grid #1, I took a small sheet of plastic window screen, cut it to the opening, and used a soldering iron to heat-stake it to the back side of the vent grid.

For #2, the frame fits into our door at a 6-degree angle, so this frame compensates so that the 90-degree vent fits perfectly. You may have to modify the design if your door is different. It also has a slot on the bottom and another on the top. Similar to #1, a screen could be heat staked to the opening, although we didn't need it for our application.

For bracket #3, I did not include holes in the 90-degree vent, as I expect few will need/use this component. If you use it, you will need to drill holes in the 90-degree vent to mount it.

To fill the gap in the open sliding glass door above the exhaust, we used wood. It is 4.5mm (3/16”) thick. For our sliding door, the panel ended up being 92mm (3.6”) wide by 1810 mm (71.6”). Your door is likely to be different, so size appropriately. It fits into the slot at the top of bracket #3.
