Description

This external spool holder is designed to work with my Lighted Tilt Riser available here: https://www.makeronline.com/en/model/Kobra%20S1%20Combo%20Lighted%20Tilt%20Riser/267438.html?trackModuleType=10

The print was optimized for 3D printing with the exception of a small amount of support for the joining tabs. I could have designed this for no supports, which is always my goal, but then I would have to add more screws and more pieces to the model for joining the front and rear halves. so I believed the small amount of waste for the support was a better choice in this model and the pieces fit really nice with little change to the stock filament and printing profiles.

The panel inserts are designed to allow for personalization and are printed separately. I elected to use clear PETG and use a 5% honeycomb infill pattern which creates large hexagons and I printed them with no bottom layers which allow the pattern to glow slightly when lit for and interesting effect from the LED lighting in the Lighted Tilt Riser. There are louvres in the panels to allow for light to pass even if they are printed in less transparent materials. Even though I used clear filament, I wanted as much light as possible to light the work area around the printer and the louvres aid in this. The panels are easily remixed for endless configurations. Perhaps there will be future releases of insertable panels to hold tools and supplies.

This spool holder model features both a right and left external spool holder option and also includes a left side with blanked out holes if only a right side holder is desired but the owner wants symmetry in appearance. If at a later date, a left side holder is desired, the pilot holes are still in the model to allow accurate drilling to open them up and add the spool holder roller assembly and filament guide, so it isn't necessary to reprint the left side pieces. If you know you want a left side holder up front due to your space requirements, you can print the left side with through holes as well.

For simplicity, the right side holder is more easily implemented with minimal modification. I used the Y minimalist splitter from Marco67 which can be found here:

https://www.makeronline.com/en/model/Y%20Minimalist%20Splitter/178265.html?trackModuleType=6

It integrates seamlessly, without bulkiness, into the existing Bowden tube exiting the filament hub and entering the print chamber and allows easy connection of the external spool holder to the system for a semi-permanent connection that can remain in place with the factory ACE Pro Connections without reconfiguring for use of either feed source.

This splitter can also be implemented for the left side holder, if used, to have a double split if both sides have holders, or as a single external source with 1 splitter installed with a long tube from the left run behind the printer. A more optimized approach would require a different geometry of the y splitter but could easily be designed based on the Y minimalist design but I haven't worked on that yet. I personally do not use a left spool holder in my setup.

I also included a 3mf of the feed tip that I used at the open end of the PTFE tube. I cannot recall where I found this model but if anyone knows I will be glad to give a link and attribution for the nice little print.

Please review the assembly guide provided for guidance for the build.
