Five-Petal Chinese Mechanical Box

Inspired by the Chinese concept of “Flowers in the Mirror, Moon in the Water”, this 3D-printed mechanical box combines traditional floral imagery, flowing water-ripple patterns, and the Mid-Autumn Festival theme of admiring the full moon.

The overall form is soft and rounded, echoing the symbolism of the full moon, reunion, and completeness. The lid features a five-petal iris mechanism: as the top is rotated, all five petals open and close simultaneously. The movement resembles ripples spreading across water and a flower slowly blooming, while also suggesting a full moon gradually revealing itself in the palm of your hand.

The pink flower at the center represents the reflected “flower in the mirror,” while the surrounding blue patterns are inspired by flowing water, corresponding to the poetic image of the “moon in the water.” The white body recalls soft moonlight, while the bright and gentle color palette creates a dreamy yet modern Eastern aesthetic.

Through mechanical interaction and digital fabrication, this design transforms the traditional Mid-Autumn idea of “blossoming flowers and a full moon” into an everyday object that can be displayed, played with, and used for storage. It is an attempt to bring traditional Chinese imagery into modern life in a more approachable and interactive form.

Assembly

The pin connections use a sliding locking slot. Rotate clockwise to lock and counterclockwise to release, as shown in the assembly diagram.

For smooth assembly, install the parts in the following order:

Main box → Base plate → Rotating plate → Small pins → Petals → Large pins

If the large pins are difficult to screw into place after the petals are installed, first insert and rotate the large pins several times without the petals. This helps loosen and fit the printed threads before final assembly.
