These IKEA KALLAX Filament Spool Holders are a great solution for storing filament spools inside an IKEA KALLAX unit. Each holder can store up to 4 or 5 spools, depending on the brand and size of the spools. You can also use them to store your filament while they are still in the boxes.
I remixed this design from the original because I thought there was a smarter way to build them—without having to drill holes in the KALLAX unit itself. The original model had rods going all the way through, with multiple screw holes. In this new version, there are no screw holes at all, and the rods no longer pass through the holders. Instead, the rods are securely clamped between the holders.
Design Details:
- Total holder thickness: 5 mm
- Bottom layer: 2 mm thick, for added pressure support (already set in Print Profile)
- Rod hole diameter: 8 mm, designed to fit a standard 8 mm aluminum rod—available at most hardware stores (usually sold in 1-meter lengths)
- Rod support lip: 3 mm
- Required rod length: 33.1 cm (KALLAX cube interior is 33.5 cm — minus 2 × 2 mm bottom layer thickness = 33.1 cm rod)
Assembly:
To ensure the best fit, measure your own KALLAX unit with a tape measure. Subtract 4 mm and cut your rod accordingly—using the same tape measure. I used a pipe cutter, which worked great.
Insert the rods in the holes from the left and right part and then shove the entire holder inside the KALLAX unit.
Optional: Save Even More Filament
If you want to reduce filament use, you can skip the 2 mm bottom layer and instead add modifiers (in your slicer) around the holes with 2 mm thickness. You can also try printing it without the extra support—it may still be strong enough. I just wanted to be sure the rods won’t press through the plastic.
P.S. The slicer might say that there is an object too close to others, but this is not the case and everything will be printed fine.
