Kobra X Anti-Tangle X-Axis LED Mount
This is a custom-designed LED lighting solution created to solve common interference issues with 3D printer lighting. After numerous iterations and testing, I am proud to share this finalized version that offers the perfect balance of functionality and aesthetics.
Why This Design?
Most LED mods for 3D printers are mounted to the top frame. However, this often causes a major issue: when printing tall objects, the Bowden tube and ribbon cables can easily get caught or rub against the light bar as the X-axis rises.
The Solution: This LED bar is designed to mount directly onto the X-axis motor cover. By moving in sync with the X-axis, the light follows the nozzle at every height.
- Zero Interference: It ensures that cables and tubes stay completely clear, no matter how tall your print is.
- Focused Lighting: The light is always perfectly positioned to illuminate your print layers and first-layer adhesion.
Development Journey
This project involved a long process of trial and error. I went through several failed prototypes and "test-fit" versions to refine the clip-on mechanism and the structural integrity. This final version is the one I am most satisfied with, offering a rock-solid fit and a clean look.
Recommended Print Settings
For the best results, I highly recommend using the following materials:
- The Mount (The Bracket): Print in PETG.
- Why: PETG provides the necessary flexibility and heat resistance to ensure the clip stays secure over time without becoming brittle.
- The LED Channel (The Rail): Print in PLA.
- Why: PLA offers excellent stiffness and dimensional stability, ensuring the long channel remains perfectly straight with a smooth surface finish.
LED Specifications:
- Type: 5V LED Strip (Adhesive-backed).
- Features: I recommend using a strip with 3 color temperatures (Cool/Warm/Neutral) and adjustable brightness for the best timelapse or monitoring results.
- Power: USB-powered. You can plug it directly into the printer's USB port for a clean, integrated 5V power source without extra wall adapters.
