Leather iPhone Holster – Forming Molds and Cutting Template

Description

This project is a set of tools for making a belt holster for a recent iPhone, in leather. It is designed for the latest generation of iPhone with a case installed, so the dimensions already account for the extra thickness of the case. It is not meant to fit a bare phone or older models.

The set contains three separate files:

  • Positive mold
  • Negative mold
  • Cutting template for the leather back panel

The molds work like any other leather forming mold. You wet the vegetable-tanned leather, place it between the positive and the negative, and let it take the shape of the phone as it dries. The template gives you the outline for cutting the back panel, so the two pieces match when you assemble the holster.

For the leather, use vegetable-tanned, at most 2.5–3 mm thick (roughly 6–7.5 oz). Thicker leather will not form properly in the mold and may not fit the phone once the case is in place.

Print settings are not critical. Any filament will do, with at least 3 walls and standard infill. The walls matter more than the infill, since the molds take pressure when the leather is pressed in.

The holster in the photos has two slots on the sides for the belt and is stitched around the edge, but the finishing is up to you. The files only cover the forming and the cutting.
