MAX Your Kobra X – Lightweight Vase Mode Spool System with Moisture Control
What if your filament system was not only more functional—but also lighter, more efficient, and visually integrated with your Kobra X?
This redesigned spool system takes a completely different approach:
large structural parts printed in vase mode, combined with a rigid internal frame for strength and precision.
---
What makes this design unique?
Vase Mode Main Structure
The three large housing parts (base + 2x cover) are printed in vase mode
Extremely material-efficient and fast to print
Lightweight without sacrificing usability
Perfect for transparent filament → clear view of the spool inside
Recommended print settings:
0.6 mm line width for optimal strength and surface quality
Can be printed without issues using a standard 0.4 mm nozzle
I used PLA, but PETG is recommended for longer durability.
You can increase the line width slightly, but check in the print preview if everything prints fine without missing lines.

Material Usage (Approx.)
KobraX_Vase-Mode-Spool-System.3mf
3mf file (in vase mode) with base and cover (one with and one without hygrometer opening - decide yourself)
Cover: 59g each (2x required)
Base: 195g
Frame+Spool-Roller+Drybox.3mf
3mf file with 0.2 layer height
Center frame + PTFE frame mount: 93g
2x rollers + 2x desiccant boxes: 180g
KobraX_PTFE_Sphere.3mf
3mf file with 0.08 layer height (for smooth movement)
PTFE connector: 2g

Hybrid Construction for Strength
A solid internal frame sits between base and top covers
Printed in standard mode for structural stability
Ensures rigidity where it actually matters
The central frame snaps and locks into the base via a defined snap-fit interface, creating a secure mechanical connection without additional fasteners
I recommend to be permanently bonded to the base for better handling.
For this purpose, alignment pins are integrated on the underside of the frame, which fit into corresponding features in the base to ensure accurate positioning during assembly.
The integrated grip areas at the central frame are not for carrying the assembly.
Result:
Lightweight shell + strong core = optimized design
---
Smooth Filament Feeding
Integrated roller system inside the base
Each spool runs on two combined rollers with 608 bearings
Very low friction → consistent filament feeding
---
PTFE Integration
Top cover includes a dedicated opening for filament entry
PTFE tube can be inserted into this spherical insert of thfilament entry
Cleaner filament path with reduced resistance
The filament entry with PTFE tube holders have been refined through multiple design iterations.
The sperical insert can rotate easily, allowing it to follow extruder movement and reduce stress on both the PTFE tube and its mounting points.
---
Moisture Control (Modular Drybox Concept)
Each filament compartment supports an optional desiccant box positioned between the two spools rolls with bearings.
It is designed to be filled with silica gel or other drying agents to help reduce moisture inside the chamber.
The system can be used for active monitoring:
A dedicated mounting point for a hygrometer is in the top cover, allowing real-time humidity tracking.
I used this one JEDEW Hygrometer Thermometer Digital Humidity Meter Indoor/Outdoor Humidity Monitor Reptile Thermometer for Humidors Greenhouse Garden Cellar Fahrenheit (℉) or Celsius(℃) (schwarz-2 Pack) (2) : Amazon.de: Haustier but others with the same size will also work.
Goal:
Turn each spool compartment into a controlled micro-environment rather than just a passive storage space.
---
Smart Mechanical Design
Optimized snap-fit system:
Frame locks firmly into the base via the central snap connection
Covers are designed for easy and fast removal
Separate lids for each spool → changing one filament does not expose the other
Integrated grip areas on the covers → improved handling during filament changes
Additional tabs on the frame → easier assembly and disassembly
The entire design is optimized for support-free printing.
---
Design Language that Matches the Kobra X
Large X-shaped geometries in base and top → strong visual match to the Kobra X
Surface design combines technical structure with deisgn elements for a distinctive and dynamic appearance
Flat areas were enhanced with x-design geometry for improved grip and visual depth
The design is specifically tailored to match the visual identity of the Kobra X.

Why this design stands out
Ultra material-efficient thanks to vase mode
Lightweight yet structurally optimized
Smooth spool movement with bearing-supported rollers
Clean filament routing with optional PTFE integration
Modular moisture control with monitoring
Strong visual identity tailored to the Kobra X
Fully support-free printable design
