Description

Naphthalene (C10H8, CAS 91-20-3) — a free educational 3D molecular model for teachers and students, by MolGod.org. Every atom carries its engraved element symbol (C, H, O, N...), so no colour key is needed.

At its heart, Naphthalene is built around two 6-membered rings, fused along a shared edge, both aromatic. The model shows 19 bonds: 8 single and 11 aromatic. Counting task: 10 C + 8 H gives 18 engraved spheres; can the class rebuild the formula C10H8 from the model alone? It makes aromaticity and delocalised electrons, as well as fused ring systems easier to see. Its closest structural relatives in the MolGod.org collection are Anthracene (CAS 120-12-7) and 2-Methoxynaphthalene (CAS 93-04-9); printing them side by side makes a quick compare-and-contrast exercise. No hydrogen-bond donors and no acceptors (computed): set it beside an alcohol to talk about intermolecular forces.

Free for education: MolGod.org publishes engraved molecular models for teachers, students and schools. Teachers: use it as a hands-on starter before drawing the structural formula on the board.

A ball-and-stick model of Naphthalene with each element symbol recessed into its atom sphere, generated by MolGod.org from a PubChem-computed 3D conformer (not an experimental crystal structure); atomic coordinates and connectivity are unchanged. STL mesh: 245,598 triangles, closed (watertight) single solid. Coordinates in ångström (STL stores no unit) — scale the model deliberately in your slicer.

Names in other languages: Naphthalin (de); naphtalène (fr); naftalene (it); naftaleen (nl); naftalen (pl); 萘 (zh).
