The Rolling Compound of Eight Octahedra is an angular shape inspired by the oloid, rolling in a straight path while wobbling in an S-shaped motion. Built with precise 90ยฐ angles, it creates an optical illusion from certain angles, almost appearing like a perfect square or cube. This adds an extra layer of intrigue, making the shape look both structured and organic, with a form reminiscent of a seashell.
Its solid surface feels satisfying to touch, and on a hard surface, it produces a gentle tapping sound as it rolls. The mix of curves and angles plays with light, creating a striking effect whether itโs moving or still.
I've only printed this in FDM using the following settings:
Infill: Gyroid, 20% (Tweak to Preference)
Supports: Not needed if printing in halves. For a single-piece print, supports are necessary and will require some cleanup.
Seam Position: Aligned
Assembly: For best results, print in two halves and glue together.
