Description

Conventional fruit fly traps focus on how the fly gets in. FLYCATRAZ focuses on ensuring it cannot get out.

Many fruit fly traps primarily address just one question: How does the fly enter? What happens inside—specifically regarding how the fly navigates—is often less carefully controlled. In classic funnel traps, ambient light frequently shines directly onto the bait, much like a flashlight beam. Transparent models even illuminate the entire interior. This allows fruit flies to orient themselves after entering.

FLYCATRAZ takes a different approach.

The central area of the container is shielded from ambient light. Fruit flies are still drawn in by the scent, but once inside, they have no direct visual cue pointing back to the entrance. Instead, small openings are deliberately placed around the outer rim of the lid. These points of light divert the flies away from the central entrance and lure them into the isolated outer zone, where they become trapped in an optical dead end: the light remains visible, but the exit is blocked. In this way, FLYCATRAZ turns the insects' natural tendency to navigate toward light against them.

For the insects, FLYCATRAZ becomes the high-security island that gives it its name: once inside, there is no escape.

Filling it is incredibly simple: just fill the container with apple cider vinegar up to the marked fill line on the inside and add a small drop of dish soap. The drop of dish soap is important because it breaks the liquid's surface tension. Without it, flies might land on the surface instead of sinking into the bait.

Tip for optimal results: Add a tiny piece of ripe fruit, such as a banana or a peach. Then, put on the lid, place the trap near the fruit bowl, organic waste, or directly at the site of the infestation, and let FLYCATRAZ do its job. To clean it, simply rinse the container by hand.

An important note on material choice: The trap can also be printed using lighter-colored materials. However, to make the most of the light-guiding concept, it is best to choose a material that is as opaque as possible. Dark anthracite or black is ideal. This keeps the central bait area dark, allowing the light points along the rim to work most effectively.
