Thiacloprid molecular model (C10H9ClN4S, CAS 111988-49-9): a free, print-ready ball-and-stick model with the element symbol engraved on every atom, designed for chemistry lessons.
Start with the ring system: Thiacloprid has two rings (one 5-membered and one 6-membered), one of them aromatic; in total the model carries 26 bonds (18 single, 1 double, 1 triple and 6 aromatic, drawn in Kekulé form). Counting task: 10 C + 9 H + 1 Cl + 4 N + 1 S gives 25 engraved spheres; can the class rebuild the formula C10H9ClN4S from the model alone? Pair it with (6-Chloropyridin-3-yl)methanol (CAS 21543-49-7) from the same collection to compare closely related structures. Team task: with the model in hand, each group marks the thioether linkage (C-S-C), the nitrile (cyano) group (-C#N), the pyridine-type ring nitrogen and the C-Cl bond, then writes down what they found. Topics it supports in class: aromaticity and delocalised electrons, heteroaromatic rings (nitrogen inside an aromatic ring), as well as organohalogen compounds and carbon-halogen bonds.
Printing: the STL is in angstrom units - scale it 10x in the slicer (1 angstrom = 10 mm). Use supports under the bonds; PLA works well.
