Description
Update 2026-10-19: print it in PETG. PLA spring arms slowly lose their spring and go limp. The included profiles are now PETG.
Keep your spools dry without loose sachets rolling around the bag. This canister slides into the centre hole of a standard 1 kg spool, so it travels with the spool into a vacuum bag or dry box.
Two versions (both included)
- v2.1 (white in photos): large 7 mm honeycomb ends over a crossed 0.8 mm mesh.
- v2.3 (black in photos): fine 2 mm honeycomb ends in two offset layers, about twice the airflow at the ends, plus fewer side slit rows so it strings less. Print this one if you're unsure.
Features
- Universal fit: 4 spiral spring arms grip spool holes of about 50-60 mm, with no adapters. The arms flex inward, so a single print fits most brands.
- Airflow all round: a honeycomb outer wall over fine horizontal slits, plus honeycomb ends top and bottom. Beads stay in and air gets through on every side.
- Holds small beads: every opening is under 1 mm, sized for loose 1-3 mm silica gel.
- Screw cap: a right-hand thread, about 1.5 turns to close, with a grip ring on the cap.
- Flange ring: sits against the spool face as a stop and doubles as a pull handle.
- Capacity: about 45-50 g of beads per canister.
- Prints without supports. No brim or skirt needed.
How to use
- Unscrew the cap and fill the body with dry silica beads.
- Screw the cap back on.
- Push the canister into the spool's centre hole, cap end first. The ring stops it at the spool face.
- Bag or box the spool as usual.
Recharging: pour the beads out and recharge them separately, for example in short microwave bursts on a plate. Don't heat the canister itself.
Print settings (profiles included, Anycubic Kobra X)
- PETG, 0.4 mm nozzle, 0.2 mm layers (keep 0.2 so the 0.6 mm slits print accurately)
- Why not PLA: the spring arms stay flexed inside the spool hub all the time. PLA slowly creeps under that load, faster in warm rooms, and the arms go limp. PETG keeps its spring.
- Arachne wall generator, 4 walls, 15% gyroid
- No supports, no brim, no skirt
- Orientation as provided: body upright (ring and arms on the bed), cap upside down (end face on the bed)
- About 32 g of PETG per set, roughly 2.5 h
- The profiles use 0.4 mm z-hop with Normal Lift, so the nozzle lifts clear of the honeycomb on short travel moves
Tips
- Stringing: in humid rooms the honeycomb can string. Dry your PETG before printing and keep z-hop on.
- Thread fit: if the cap feels tight, check the first layer and your elephant-foot compensation.
Printing from the spool?
Swap the canister for my Threaded Spool Lock Adapter - same 50-60 mm hub fit, locks the spool to the holder tube so it spins without wobble. Canister for storage, lock for printing.
