Pen with magnetic holder


The pen is designed to host a common gel pen refill, but it is also compatible with standard ballpoint refills provided they match the internal dimensions (see reference images). The base and the pen tail incorporate neodymium magnets that allow for a secure and satisfying magnetic snap connection. The pen body is printed vertically to ensure perfect circularity and a smooth finish.

Materials Required (Not included in STL files)

To complete this project, you will need to source the following separately:

Magnets: 5x Neodymium Magnets (Dimensions: Ø5mm x H2mm).

3 magnets for the base.

2 magnets for the pen tail cap.

Ink Refill: 1x Gel pen refill or standard ballpoint refill (refer to project images for exact dimensions).

Filament: PLA (recommended).

Adhesive: Cyanoacrylate glue (Super Glue) - minimal amount needed to lock the ends.


Print Settings

Material: PLA

Layer Height: 0.16mm (recommended for a balance between detail and speed)

Supports: None required

Bed Adhesion: Brim is recommended for the pen body.

Orientation:

Pen Body: Print VERTICALLY to preserve the cylindrical shape and smoothness.

Base & Caps: Print flat on the bed.

Infill: 15%


Assembly Instructions

Magnets: Locate the 5 neodymium magnets.

Base: Insert the 3 magnets into the designated slots in the base stand.

Polarity Check (CRITICAL): Before gluing or inserting magnets into the pen, bring the pen tail close to the base to verify attraction. The magnets in the pen tail must be oriented to be attracted to the base magnets.

Pen Tail: Insert the 2 magnets into the pen tail cap, respecting the polarity verified in the previous step.

Insert Refill: Place the gel or ballpoint refill into the central cylindrical body.

Close: Attach the tip and the tail cap to the central body.

Fixing: Apply a very small amount of cyanoacrylate glue only on the extremities (tip and tail) to lock the assembly. Note: This version uses glue for stability. A fully removable version for easier refill replacement is planned for future updates.

Safety & Warnings

Magnets: Neodymium magnets are extremely powerful. Handle with care to avoid pinching fingers. Keep away from small children and sensitive electronic devices (pacemakers, credit cards, etc.).

Glue: Use cyanoacrylate with caution in a ventilated area.


Notes for Makers

This project was born to be simple and effective. Currently, the ends are glued to prevent accidental opening during magnetic use. I am working on a "clip-on" version to make the refill replaceable without glue. If you have suggestions to improve the closing system, please leave a comment!
