R70-B More Than Just Another Boomerang
At first glance, the R70-B is a very simple two-wing boomerang.
But this model was not created mainly to look interesting
it was built as part of a much larger attempt to understand
and document how I currently design 3D-printed boomerangs.
Over the years, I have repeatedly been asked how I design my boomerangs and whether there is a formula that can simply be followed. My usual answer was: not really. A large part of boomerang development is still trial and error…. design, print, throw, observe, modify and test again.
However, after building and testing many different models, I started noticing that certain proportions and construction decisions worked more reliably than others. The R70-B became one of the reference models I used to break this process down into measurable parameters and practical starting points.
Together with the R70-A and R85-A, it was specifically used to compare changes in geometry and flight behaviour. Experience from earlier working designs such as Nimbus, Parrot and HoneyThriller also contributed to the construction approach behind this model.
The result is my current R70-B Design Study.
It is not intended to be an ultimate guide, a universal aerodynamic formula or a claim that this is the “correct” way to build a boomerang. It is simply a documented look at the design process I currently use for flat FDM-printed two-wing boomerangs… based on existing literature, CAD experiments, printed test models and real flight testing.
This release therefore includes more than just the printable R70-B:
- R70-B printable model
- R70-B Design Study Preview PDF
- Fusion 360 CAD video showing the complete construction process
- Real flight testing and comparison with R70-A and R85-A
The PDF explains the relationships I currently pay attention to when designing a new model, including opening angle, arm proportions, profile thickness, profile construction, width loss, radii, center of mass and the practical CAD workflow.
Some parts of the study are intentionally still marked as open questions. Parameters such as elbow geometry, arm tips, profile radii and asymmetric designs still require more controlled comparison tests before I consider the complete R70-B Design Study finished.
So think of this release as a look behind the scenes:
not “this is how a boomerang must be designed”, but “this is how I currently approach designing one.”
The R70-B itself is flight tested and serves as the central reference model for this current construction system.
