At first glance, it looks like a tiny, adorable yellow chicken. But this little chicken is hiding a very practical purpose — it is a reusable 3D-printed trap designed to attract and catch fruit flies.
I wanted to turn an ordinary insect trap into something that feels more like a cute desktop object or small piece of décor. Instead of a traditional bottle, cup, or unattractive plastic trap, this design disguises the trapping device as a friendly little chicken.
💡 Design Concept
The Cute Chicken Fruit Fly Trap is built around a simple idea:
Make an effective insect trap that people actually enjoy keeping visible.
Fruit flies are attracted to sweet or fermented scents. A small amount of suitable bait can be placed inside the chicken body. The opening on the back provides an entrance for the flies, while the internal space acts as the trapping chamber.
Once the flies enter, the enclosed design makes it difficult for them to escape.
The body is designed as two main parts, allowing the trap to be opened for bait replacement, cleaning, and reuse.
✨ Key Features
🐔 Cute chicken-inspired design – Looks like a small decorative figure rather than a conventional insect trap.
🪰 Designed for fruit flies – Suitable for use in kitchens, dining areas, cafés, offices, or near fruit bowls.
♻️ Reusable – Simply open the body, clean it, and replace the bait.
🧩 Two-piece construction – Separates into the upper and lower body for easier maintenance.
🖨️ 3D-printing friendly – Designed with FDM 3D printing in mind.
🎨 Easy to customize – The body, eyes, beak, feet, and colors can be customized to create different characters.
🏠 Compact and unobtrusive – Small enough to place on a countertop without taking up much space.
🛠️ How It Works
Place a small amount of fruit-fly bait inside the trap.
The scent attracts nearby fruit flies.
Flies enter through the opening on the back of the chicken.
They remain inside the enclosed trapping chamber.
When the trap needs servicing, simply open the body, remove the contents, clean it, and refill it.
🎯 Why I Designed It This Way
Many insect traps focus only on function. My goal was to combine function + usability + visual appeal.
Instead of hiding an insect trap in a corner, I wanted to create something people would be happy to leave on their kitchen counter.
The result is a small yellow chicken that looks innocent and playful — but secretly works as a fruit fly trap.
This project is also an experiment in functional 3D printing, where a playful object can solve a real everyday problem.
🖨️ 3D Printing
The design is intended for standard FDM 3D printers and can be printed in multiple colors to create the chicken character shown in the photos.
PLA is suitable for the prototype and decorative use. For environments where higher temperature resistance or greater durability is desired, other suitable filaments may also be considered.
