Good Morning to You Too
On Halloween everyone paints themselves up as the Joker and spends an hour in front of the mirror trying to get the smile right. This gargoyle didn’t waste any time: the smile comes standard, and to be clear about it he added a sign underneath. THIS IS MY HAPPY FACE. RUN.
The Joker kept Gotham hostage for years with elaborate plans, explosives, hostages and enough face paint to make a mime jealous. This gargoyle gets the same result with a sign and zero hours of makeup. No plan, no henchmen, no explaining to the police why he bought a thousand balloons.
The Joker asks “why so serious?” and then helps you smile with a knife. The gargoyle is more polite: he leaves your face exactly as it is and just gives you some friendly advice. Run. Old school chivalry.
But the Joker never understood the key thing: a sign has no tragic backstory. It won’t tell you three different versions of how it got that scar. It says one thing, says it clearly, and says it to everyone.
Imagine Batman walking into the hideout and finding this on the Joker’s desk. He reads it. He stays silent for three minutes. Then he goes back to the Batcave, makes himself a chamomile tea and the movie ends four minutes in. Tickets are not refundable.
On Halloween put it on the windowsill: the kids read, think it over and give up the candy with a dignity nobody saw coming. On your desk it’s even better: the phrase “got a minute?” vanishes from your office. Your coworker has the minute, but he’d rather spend it running away.
