NumberBlocks – Polyomino Set 1–10
Education-Focused 3D Printable System with Modular 100/1000 Expansion
This project combines mathematical education with maker creativity.
It includes number blocks from 1 to 10 designed as 3D printable polyomino shapes.
Important Clarification
- From 1–6, all mathematically possible polyomino combinations are fully included.
- From 7–10, 4 carefully selected variants per number are included.
Why?
Starting at 7, the number of possible polyomino combinations increases exponentially.
From 7 onward there are already over 100 variations, and up to 10 there would be well over 4000 possible shapes.
For a practical, printable, and classroom-friendly system, a curated selection was chosen intentionally.
The visual design is inspired by the BBC series Numberblocks, translating its block-based concept into a physical learning system.
Educational Value
This set enables:
- Visual and tactile number understanding
- Number decomposition and recomposition
- Exploration of area and symmetry
- Introduction to combinatorial thinking
- Montessori-style hands-on learning
Children don’t just see numbers — they build, break apart, and reinvent them.
Maker Focus
- Optimized for clean and reliable 3D printing
- Perfect for multi-color printing or filament leftovers
- Fully modular and expandable
- Ideal for schools, homeschooling, and STEM projects
- Open for custom extensions and remixes
The system encourages makers to experiment with colors, scaling, and creative expansions.
Modular 100/1000 System
The included box is expandable:
- Each layer represents a 10×10 grid (100 units)
- Stackable vertically
- Optional: build a full 1000-block cube using 10 layers
This allows physical visualization of ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands.
Recommendation for Filling the First 100 Grid
To fully fill the first 100-grid layer, you could:
- Print the A and B variant of each block from 1 to 10
- Print the 2-block twice
- Print the 1-block four times
Many other combinations are possible — the variety of included polyominos offers plenty of creative freedom.
This project connects mathematics, design, and 3D printing into a meaningful educational tool for the next generation of makers.
NumberBlocks – Polyomino Set 1–10
- Einführung in kombinatorisches Denken
